Great Opportunities for Students

What’s new for San Antonio 2015?

1) 2015 Student Chapter of the Year (SCOTY) Award: We are pleased to announce the third annual recognition of the most outstanding SFT student chapter. This award will be based on established criteria (see SCOTY application) and will focus on student involvement both at their respective schools as well as at the national meeting. The 2015 award is sponsored by Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital with $1,000 awarded to the winning chapter, and $500 awarded for second place. The winning chapters will be announced at the Awards Dinner on Friday evening, August 7.

Cost: None

Action needed: Complete the one-page SCOTY application form at the end of the academic year (May 2015) and submit by June 1, 2015. Form and guidelines are available here.

2) Quiz Bowl: The Merck Therio Quiz Bowl will be held during the Thursday evening Fun Night event in the exhibit hall. This event will feature teams of three students from each chapter and will include questions covering theriogenology in all species. The master of ceremonies for the competition will be Mr. Ron McDaniel, National Equine Sales Manager for Merck Animal Health and SFT cowboy poet laureate. Winning team members will each receive a personal prize as well as a cash award for their chapter ($300 for 1st place, $100 for 2nd) and points toward winning the 2015 SCOTY Award.

Cost: None

Action needed: Email Dr. Ernie Martinez at by June 1, 2015 to reserve a spot for your team. Names of your team members should be confirmed at that time. Team members must be student SFT members that have completed either first, second or third year of vet school (sorry, new grads are not eligible for this event)!

Student Travel grants are available through the Theriogenology Foundation to those students who are presenting or participating on a Quiz Bowl team in San Antonio. Deadline for application is June 1. For more information click here.

3) T-shirt Design Competition: Student SFT clubs are becoming famous for their shirts. Does your SFT student chapter have a fun t-shirt design? Bring them to San Antonio for the third-annual SFT T-shirt Design competition sponsored by Bovine Services, LLC!

Shirts will be on display in a central area at the meeting and all attendees will be given a ballot for voting. The chapter with the winning t-shirt design will receive a cash award ($300 for 1st place, $100 for 2nd) as well as points toward winning the 2015 SCOTY Award. Each chapter that participates will also have the option to sell their shirts during the conference for extra fundraising dollars if they so choose. (If you offer shirts for sale during the conference, plan to have a student from your chapter responsible for this during exhibit hall hours.)

Cost: Two shirts

Action needed: Email Dr. Robyn Wilborn at by June 29, 2015 to confirm your chapter’s entry and reserve display space at the t-shirt booth. Bring two shirts (size L) to the meeting registration desk by noon on Thursday, August 6 for entry in the competition. After voting, shirts on display will be donated to the Theriogenology Foundation and used in the Silent Auction. The winning design will be announced at the Annual Awards Dinner on Friday evening, August 7, along with the Quiz Bowl winners and 2015 SCOTY Award winners.

4) Meeting Mentors: We plan to pair each student attendee in San Antonio with a seasoned SFT member. This will give them a great contact to chat with at the meeting and would be a wonderful networking tool for externships, etc. An informal "Meet Your Mentor” gathering will be held immediately following the Student Case Presentations on Thursday at 5 pm to introduce students to their mentors. Sponsored by Hagyard Equine Medical Institute.

Cost: None

Action needed: None. Students registered for the conference will automatically be assigned an SFT member as a meeting mentor.
