Student Events in San Antonio
Theriogenology students are expected to inundate the city of San Antonio, TX with excitement this year as participants in the 2015 Therio Conference! There are multiple opportunities for students to be involved in the conference events.
Students may submit an abstract for consideration by the ACT abstract committee. The deadline is February 2 and details are available here.
The student case presentations are always exciting. Submissions for consideration are due by March 10 and details about how to submit are available on the SFT website here. Students whose papers are selected for presentation are eligible to win prize money and also to apply for travel grants.
All of the student artists should be working on their designs for the student chapter t-shirt competition. Be creative and think a little differently! T-shirts will be displayed at the conference and voted on by the attendees. T-shirts can be made available for purchase and the winning designs will receive prize money and points to help their schools’ SCOTY efforts. Deadline to notify Dr. Wilborn (firstname.lastname@example.org) that you wish to take part in the competition is June 29.
Student attendees can gain “been there, done that” practical advice and mentoring by being paired with an SFT member during the Student-Mentor reception which will take place right after the Student Case Presentations. Students will be paired with a member mentor based on species preference. You will gain insight into questions you may have about your career path, help open the door to possible intern/externships as well as make a new friend!!
The Merck Student Quiz Bowl will be held Thursday night, August 6 as a part of the extended Exhibit Hall Opening Reception kick-off event. Teams of three students from each entered CVM will compete to win money for their student chapter and points towards the SCOTY. The winning team will also receive a copy of the book “Pathways to Pregnancy and Parturition” by Dr. Phil Senger of Current Conceptions. The event will be emceed by the always entertaining Cowboy Poet, Mr. Ron McDaniel. Rumor has it that there might even be a team of member practitioners in the mix. Always a lively event, it will test your knowledge and keep you laughing at the same time. Plenty to eat and a cash bar, everyone is invited to come out and cheer on their favorite team.
The Society for Theriogenology’ s third annual Student Chapter of the Year (SCOTY) Award will be presented in San Antonio, TX at the Annual Awards Dinner prior to the Theriogenology Foundation Live Auction. This award, sponsored by Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, will recognize the student chapter that most exemplifies the SFT's mission: …to promote standards of excellence in reproductive medicine, to provide outreach and education to veterinarians, and to foster continual improvements in theriogenology. The winning chapter will receive a traveling banner for display at their school for the following year, a plaque recognizing the award and a prize of $1,000 to be used to host a chapter event and/or speaker. Second place will receive a plaque and a prize of $500 to be used for chapter events.
Student Chapter of the Year contestants can earn their team points in a variety of ways including:

2. Student chapter activities such as number of meetings held, number of speakers from within the university, and speakers from outside of the university
