Merck suspends Zilmax sales to study cattle health concerns

Merck & Co. is halting sales of the cattle feed additive Zilmax amid concerns about distress and mobility issues in cattle. The drugmaker said it did not believe Zilmax was to blame, but it is studying the issue. Zilmax and another additive are used to improve beef production, and the compounds have been increasingly used amid drought conditions. Tyson Foods said earlier this month that it would stop buying cattle that had been fed Zilmax in light of the concerns. An FDA spokeswoman said the agency has received "a very small number of reports of lameness or lying down" in Zilmax-treated cattle.
