Dr. Ted Lock

Ted Lock, DVM, MS, DACT of Bloomington, IN has been selected as the 2012 recipient of the Dr. David E. Bartlett Award.  This award is presented annually to a distinguished individual who has made important contributions to the field of theriogenology.

Dr. Ted Lock, after a year in practice, dedicated his professional life of thirty-six years to the fields of equine theriogenology and equine field service at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois, and retired in 2004. 

Dr. Lock was awarded the Norden Distinguished Teaching Award five times as a result of his exemplary teaching in theriogenology.  Over the years Dr. Lock served on thirty graduate student committees, published over sixty manuscripts, presented eighteen abstracts and made thirty-two continuing education presentations, twenty-eight of them on equine theriogenology.  He is known for his pioneering work in alpha fetoprotein and distribution of penicillin, oxytetracycline, and chloremphenicol in the uterus after intrauterine or systemic administration.  He and his research group also garnered over $650,000 for research support.  These are just a few examples of the tremendous accomplishments and contributions Dr. Lock has made during his career. 

In addition to all that Dr. Lock has contributed to the field of theriogenology he has been an active member of the Society for Theriogenology since its inception and served in many positions in the American College of Theriogenologists including: Examination Committee (1980-1985), Secretary (1986-1989) and President (1992-1993).

When asked, a colleague of Dr. Lock described him as “perhaps the best clinician I have ever worked with or ever will.  Ted is a good friend, a gentleman, and a professional.”

This year’s Bartlett Award presentation will take place at 8:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 22, 2012 during the Annual Therio Conference in Baltimore, MD.
