Description of Practice This would be an unique opportunity and apply to a student who has not experienced whelping, wishing to experience it from start to finish and though the babies fragile few days of life and/or wishing to understanding the struggles between breeders and vets. I am a vet who breeds Cavaliers and shows them - I mostly staying at home with my son and breeding and show girls at this point. The opportunity would give the student a real world experience of whelping and caring for newborns and the bitch during the peritpartum time frame and how to deal with potential complications. I interact extensively with breeders It would only be valuable to the student when I have a litter due (ie - likely three litters in May/June ish 2012). If so desired, it could likely be tied into a show as well so the student could get an inside view of what dog showing is about from a vet perspective and a owner/handle perspective.

Description of Practice I am a solo practitioner and I provide services for 28 small dairy herds (30 to 650 cows), 4 hobby beef herds, and about a dozen small ruminant clients. I offer one or two externship opportunities per year for veterinary students. I make extensive use of ultrasound in my reproductive work, and rent a machine for use by senior veterinary student externs so that they can become more skilled in the use of this technology by following me as I scan animals, rather than just observing. Externships may last 2-3 weeks. Three weeks is usually preferable in terms of developing competence and confidence in using ultrasound.

Description of Practice Honahlee PC is a private practice in the spectacular Pacific Northwest that is limited to equine reproduction. We have 2 clinic/ facilities within 10 minutes of eaxh other for clinical practice and an IVF lab at Oregon Health Sciences University. DR metcalf is also an adjunct faculty member at the OSU CVM so patients are evaluated there as well. Depending on the background of the 4th year student, they will participate in stallion BSE, semen collection, evaluation, and processing for shipment (cooled and frozen), mare BSE, insemination, breeding management, ET and oocyte collection. Students are involved with foaling out mares, postfoaling exams, and working with foals. Rounds are conducted every morning. Students are often given their own cases (mares involved in research projects or recipients) whereby they are responsible for breeding, and if apprpriate, embryo flush and transfer. Although there is no "emergency duty", there are often long daily hours in timing insemination or treatments, as well as foal-watch.

Description of Practice This is an Assisted Reproductive Technology laboratory. The student will be likely to observe transvaginal aspiration of follicles in our research mares and/or in clinical cases, to observe methods for oocyte recovery, maturation, and micromanipulation (for intracytoplasmic sperm injection or nuclear transfer) and to help with ongoing bench research projects in sperm capacitation or other gamete-releated research. There may be some reproductive management of the research mares for embryo collection or embryo transfer; the activites the student will observe depend upon the projects ongoing at the time of the student's visit. There is little chance for hands-on horse work.

The airport is just 45 minutes away from the vetschool and easy accessible by public transport or taxi.We have a busy small and large animal hospital with many board-certified clinicians in orthopedics, soft tissue, dermatology, pathology...and reproduction. On the repro side we have 1 ACT and 2 ECAR boarded diplomates. Speaking french is not necessary as most clinicians here speak english. The small animal reproduction cases are mainly related to the different aspects of reproductive management of breeding dogs (ie. vaginal insemination, TCI, pregnancy diagnosis, whelping management, semen collection, evaluation and freezing, etc.) and referred male and female infertility cases. The equine reproduction caseload consists of artificial insemination of raw, chilled and frozen semen, foaling out mares, ET and mare and stallion infertility problems. There are also plenty of small and some large animal reproductive surgery cases to do.

Description of Practice MVS (www.matamatavets.co.nz) is a 14 veterinarian, mixed practice situated in the Waikato (the main horse breeding and dairy) region of New Zealand, 1.5 hours south of Auckland. Our dairy section currently provides services for 45,000 dairy cows with seasonal calving occurring between 20th July and 15th September. All 45,000 cows calve during this 8-week period, therefore the bovine obstetrical caseload is very high during this time and we encourage the students to participate in as many dystocia cases as possible. Students will also be involved in other dairy cattle ambulatory calls allowing exposure to a wide variety of other emergency calls as well as routine herd health visits. The Small Animal Reproduction section ("Glenbred”) is led by Dr. Fiona Hollinshead and provides all aspects of reproductive management in both individual breeding dogs as well as a number of working dog organisations including; The NZ Guide Dogs, NZ and NSW Police Dog Unit and The MAF Detector/NZ Quarantine dog breeding unit. Procedures performed include AI (breeding approximately 250 bitches per year predominantly via the endoscopic TCI technique, as well as surgical and vaginal insemination), semen collection, semen assessment and semen freezing. We also see a high number of referral male and female infertility cases. We also provide canine pregnancy/whelping management and perform approximately 20 C'sections per year. Dr Dave Hanlon provides routine reproductive management on a number of Thoroughbred farms throughout the region - the students have the opportunity to observe and participate in emergency support (under the close guidance of both the Theriogenology resident and Dr. Dave Hanlon) to a stud farm that foals around 250 mares per season. Other equine reproduction caseload involves all aspects of assisted reproductive technologies (AI/ET, semen collection, freezing etc.) and referral services for infertility and reproductive surgery. We have a board certified equine surgeon, giving the students the opportunity to be involved with equine surgery (time permitting).

Description of Practice Our section has 5 vets and the section chief working in the teaching hospital ("Tierspital"). We see a variety of reproductive cases in canine and feline species both in males and females, e.g. prostatitis, testicular tumors, post-spay incontinence, dystocia, pyometra, etc. We carry out all reproductive surgeries including C-sections, routine spay and neuters, pyometra surgeries, mammary tumor removals. We provide services to neonates and pediatric patients up to 3 months of age. Breeding management of bitches including ovulation timing and AI is carried out to a lesser extent with most cases in the spring-summer months. Breeding soundness examinations of stud dogs are provided by the andrology service of the Tierspital and not by our section. Knowledge of German is an advantage but almost everybody speaks English so communication problems are not foreseen.
